Many boards require a background check prior to hiring a manager. The employment screen process may include the potential manager's criminal records, workman compensation history, motor vehicle record, credit history and court records. For some associations, this process may also include drug testing, verification of past employment and checking references from at least 3 previous board members or supervisors. National standards for employment screening have been set by The Fair Credit Reporting Act. There are many reputable companies that specialize in employment screening. A thorough background check can minimize hiring risks for associations and assist the board in the selection of the right manager for their position.
